so i was listening to a recording of dmb's show at FleetCenter this winter [ which Ken and i were at ], and remebered this outro to #41. funny how it all makes sense when you see the lyrics to "Everyday" on Everyday. the fact that they made musical sense of it as an outro to #41 is all the much cooler.Dave Matthewspick me up, love, from the bottom. everyday.

so far i am really enjoying everyday. from the beautiful booklet layout and photography, to the new adaptations of old dmb songs (#36 into everyday and little thing into dreams of our fathers), it's definitely different. and that's what matters to me. i don't want to say more about it for another week or so, i need to absorb and analyze.(note: on the drive back from boston today, i finally deciphered the confusing time in fool to think... it's a straight four in the verse, actually, but phrased in 3-3-2. the chorus is in five (or 3-2), if my memory serves me correctly. someone correct me if i'm wrong..)

Hooray for happy, skippy, beautiful, musical, and other joyous feelings! *purr* Have fun!Cindy, 20:31: #
When I was near the library rushing to another event tonite (as usual), I suddenly looked up and realized how beautiful the Boston skyline looked. Isn't that weird, that concrete buildings and yellow lights could be so beautiful? Who would've ever thought, a thousand years ago, that we would have places such as these, common, ordinary places like these, and that they could capture so much life and energy in just one small area? The capability of humans is truly amazing.louis, 19:59: #
as you know by now, i'm very curious about what everyone has to say about Everyday.Jilly, 19:59: #
March is hell!! There is so much going on it is crazy! But there is lots of good music to be played too so that is ok. I am leaving for Penn. on thursday to take the zachster to the All-Eastern Festival...should be a blast! See ya later!!!emily, 17:09: #
Today I've been in a really happy, skippy mood...for no reason at all. Maybe it's because I'm going to see Die Zauberflute at the Met in a week. Maybe it's because my friend just went out and bought me Everyday. Maybe it's because I didn't need to wear a heavy jacket today since it was so warm. Maybe it's because I had fun in my classes today and found fun german music [check out the group, "Die Prinzen," if you ever get a chance ;) ] Or maybe it's because I may be playing in the orchestra for an opera company this summer [yay!]. Hope you are having a great day too :)Cindy, 14:28: #

Well...I realized today that I am really going to miss this class of seniors!!! They were my first sixth grade band, and so many of them are such fine musicians. As I taught nine...yes nine, lessons in a row, I realized three of them were great seniors and I would really miss them. Then there is Alexis, basketball, and of course smarples....I may even cry when they graduate. It was just nice to realize that they had all become accomplished clarinet players. Sometimes teaching is neato....:-)louis, 02:19: #

friday afternoon, when i got to Oxfam Café, i discovered that my new camera was broken. its optical viewfinder was stuck at about 3.7x zoom and the camera could not focus properly. needless to say, i was dissatisfied. i discussed what happened with aryn, who had somewhat similar problems with his Coolpix 950. so, defying my obligatory procrastination, i made my way to Nikon's tech support page and sent them a note asking what i should do about it.
i wandered about the campus with Cindy for a while, and about three hours later, i received word from Nikon that i should talk to the kind folks @amazon.com, due to the short period between the camera malfunctioning and its purchase. i had just withdrawn from a fight of sorts with amazon.com regarding the fact that i almost didn't get my camera on time for my New York trip. however, within twelve hours of e-mailing them, Melissa B. let me know that amazon.com is sending me a new camera via UPS Next Day Air. to this, i said 'word,' and zipped off a quick thank you note. i guess that's why i paid the extra ten or twenty bucks - for unparalleled customer service. amazon.com is perhaps the biggest reason why i shop online.louis, 20:56: #

Tonight our UFO showed Almost Famous and so many people bought tickets that my friends and I had to sit in the movie theater's aisle. But the movie was lots of fun...you should go see it. The best part of tonight happened when we got back to the dorm after the film. For some reason we decided to take the elevator instead of the stairs. Anyway, when we got on the elevator, Leigh Ann and I pressed all of the floor buttons. We stopped at the 2nd floor so my friends Leigh Ann and Homer could get off, but Kristin, Lindsey, and I stayed on (seeing as how we live on the 3rd floor). The doors shut, but then the elevator didn't move. So we stood there for about 30 seconds kind of like "ummm...yeah..so this is going to start moving any second now....riight" It didn't. We ended up having to call public safety, and it took them about 20 minutes to get us out. The funny part was how they kept asking if we were alright and telling us that they were going to get us out because that's exactly how you picture one of those emergency type teams. I think the moral of this story is definitely take the stairs from now....um, yeah. good night2001-02-23

That quote from Christophe, about snow falling like boulders, reminds me of something my friend Emily said: "Sometimes I feel like snowflakes should be bullets and things would be much, much easier." I went to Interlochen with Emily this past summer. (yes, I'm sorry, another Interlochen reference) She was a creative writing major. As I read in her open diary (opendiary.com), things are not going well with her. When I visited her yesterday, she was as happy as pie. It was a lie. Or maybe, she was briefly happy for the ten or so hours that I spent there. I don't believe it. I wish I could do something to make her feel better, but alas, I have nothing. I'm glad I got to visit her, though. That must've helped...somehow.There is too much truth in the idea that vacation is almost over. Boo. I've been getting more and more sick as the days pass, but maybe I'll feel better soon. My brother is in town this weekend, but he cannot come to our house. He is debating at BC this weekend for his U of Rochester team. Hooray! Go him!
I talked to a friend today who I haven't really talked to in a year. We always seem to be saying that whenever we hang up the phone: "Wow, we haven't talked in like a year. I'm so glad you called." Although it is always an exaggeration, it is usually true. In fact, when using the word "like," it is ALWAYS true. Anyway, most of you know this friend of mine: Rebecca. Yeah, so she goes to the same school as me. And we have classes together. And she barely lives five minutes away. And yet, we hardly talk. Busy, busy, busy...?
That is about it for my self-centered entry. Sorry about that. Sometimes I forget about this place... perhaps I don't hear it with all this noise. So I leave long me-entries. Sorry. Have fun.

how academia intrigues me
a discussion of slacking and why i do it so much
i pay attention in class, and i go to class, if you discount the last two days, wherein i have taken a bit of a holiday. anyhoo, christophe and i do any school work we have within the half hour preceding the class where the homework is due. i don't study for tests. it was a bad habit... i finally kicked it by going cold turkey. don't plan to do it again. so, my question is, how can i do well in classes while doing no work for them? am i coasting on my own geekiness? am i somehow prodigious? i really don't think that i am - i'm efficient at slacking, but i think that's all i'm really good at doing.
this all comes to my mind as i just got back my first midterm. i didn't study for it at all. i told you... i kicked that habit. those who concern themselves with grades would claim that i did well on the exam. i claim that i didn't do well enough. perhaps i think too much in binary modes - the notion of partial credit only feeds my habit of bullshitting assignments left and right, and never bothering to tackle a subject in true depth. those that i tackle in depth - xhtml, css, crypto, php, etc. - i work on until i attain some level of mastery. but it's always all or nothing - either i get interested in a subject and learn all about it, or just do what minimal work necessary to bullshit my way through topics i care little about. to me, it's 1 [ true ] and 0 [ false ].
i don't care about french. this much is clear to me. i'm just fascinated that the one skill in which i've improved most notably during my tenure at Tufts is the art of bullshit, and i don't want that to crossover into how i lead my life. that's why i'm afraid that people consider academics a form of art. if the 'liberal' in liberal arts is referring to a standard of excellence, that would make things more clear to me, but i just can't imagine it being that way. these are the trials and tribulations of an everyday louis.louis, 14:21: #

it's time to examine what's happening in my life. what inspires me to change the world? to see things differently? to be the round peg in the square hole, if you will. too often i take the time to show my appreciation only to the people i love, because i take for granted all of the things i love to do. it's food for my soul. it's what drives me, deep down inside. think about it: chances are that you'll never get in a fight with music. you'll never break up with your hobby of underwater basketweaving, comparitive drinking, or whatever it is that floats your boat. if you do, you'll get pissed off at or disappointed in yourself. in the long run, you need to live with you. take a moment this 'holiday' to give yourself a rose, some chocolates, or a card.

here's my issue with valentine's day. if someone needs to set aside one day to get his/her sweetie, fcuker, or love gifts and let them know that s/he cares for the other, aren't there issues that need to be worked out? should not each of us live every day as his or her last? should not each of us let his or her sweetie, fcuker, or love get gifts and communicate that s/he loves and cares every day? the fact that we have such a holiday as valentine's day draws my mind to William Wordsworth's poem "The World Is Too Much With Us." perhaps i become disappointed in the [ stereotypical ] human too easily.louis, 15:58: #

Subject: [uwebd] Re: web tv woes
No, that's a cop-out. :-)We seem to have taken a hope, an ideal - content can be delivered everywhere to everyone - and have turned it into a dogma: content must be deliverable everywhere. It's a bit like saying we should be able to translate every phrase from every language into every other language with no change or loss in meaning. It cannot be done. Perhaps some of the difficulties we are encountering stems from differences in media and purpose that are irreconcilable.I think this is a cop-out. I've looked at a lot of web sites and after careful research have concluded that 90%+ of them have made little or no efforts towards accessibility.
I agree few have made any effort at all towards accessibility, but that wasn't my point. I was trying to move beyond accessibility to the larger question of multiple platforms, one message. The clear implication from the W3C is that if you just design to the spec, then your pages will work everywhere. The issue here is with the verb. A page can work in technical terms, yet fail in communication terms. If someone doesn't care about whether their page has communicated a message, then fine, but many people do care. Marketing and PR types especially care, and they are the ones that tend to drive the breaking of standards (plus geeks who just like to invent stuff).

i don't know much about "horse ball," but i would have some reservations about wearing one of these to play it.Jon, 18:08: #
The most bizarre thing happened to me today. last week, my mother signed onto AIM, so i said "hi mom." she reponded back in french. i thought it weird, but i had to run, so i didn't think too much of it. today, she signs on again, so i say hi. again, i get an answer in french. i asked "who is this? how did you get this screen name?" she said "i'm sorry, i don't understand." at this point i abandoned all thought that this was my mother. it turns out that the owner of the screename is a 17 year old girl from orleans, france. she likes to "danse" and likes "horse ball." she only speaks a little english, but speaks spanish and french. she goes to miami in the summer, and likes disney world. she's never heard of dave mathews band. Mom, where did you go?? what the hell is happening? on a different note, i made a new friend. and all i have to do is use a english to french translator to talk to her. besides the continent and language difference, i think we have a chance. i sense real chemistry here.louis, 10:24: #
when navigating through my old bookmarks more, i went to the uua website, and decided to see if "my church" has a webpage yet. indeed, it does: first parish church, the church i grew up in.it's funny. i'm an athiest. i decided this fall that, if there is a god, it does not have a place in my life. but i didn't and don't go to chuch to get in touch with god or any of that - i went to church for the community. for the better part of ten years, i attended weekly. the last four years i was in a youth group called the HIP group - humans interested in people. the group has its own page off of the main church page. whilst playing around on that site, i ran into a collection of photos from the group trip to GA ( General Assembly, not Georgia). after all of the pictures of GA, there's a broken link to a picture of the group in 1998, at our going away party for group member Will.
i remember Will. he'd get very excited whenever we played a game called "sock soccer," wherein you have a really slippery wood floor and a ball made of duct tape. everyone takes his or her shoes off and slides all over the place trying to get this ball into the opponent's goal. it got very funny at points, especially with the likes of me playing. [ i have very little coordination, you see. ] we had a party for Will in 1998 because his father had just received a job offer in Phoenix, and he was moving out there with his family. we were all very close to him, as he'd been in the group for several years, and was always there, smiling and chuckling. i miss will
this summer. on july twentieth, my friend Dawn from HIP called. i missed the call - she called my house in Duxbury, and i was living with Ken in Somerville at the time - but my mom took a message for me. as i learned, Will was manic depressive. he had disappeared two weeks earlier - his parents last saw him when he was taking a walk or something. by the time Dawn called, the police in Phoenix had conducted a large scale search, and found his body. i miss his smile. i miss his chuckle. i miss the way he used to take sock soccer so seriously. i miss will.louis, 10:00: #

i am slowly getting tired of long distance salesmen. not that they call all the time. not that they have the grammar and speaking skills of a fourth grader. but no one seems to be able to beat the rate i get from sprint. a typical call:really, this has happened 6 or 7 times since i got my plan. including just now, when i had to explain to the salesman how simple economics works.me: hello?
salesdude:hi, i'm calling about your long distance plan yadda yadda yadda (at this point i usually put the phone down for a bit and let them talk) yadda yadda , what do you currently pay for long distance?
me: i get seven cents a minute, anywhere/time, no monthy fee.
salesdude: no monthly fee?
me: ah, ya dude.
salesdude: um, we currently cannot offer a better deal than that.
me: (hangs up)
morons. anyone have any better ideas for long distance service?me: (after normal introduction) you see, no monthly fee is preferrable to large monthly fee.
him: but if you pay seven cents per minute on the weekend now, you can use our plan for five cents a minute on the weekend. that's a savings of [he actually paused here] two cents per call.
me: <sigh> i think you mean two cents per minute. anyway, when you charge me extra money every month, i don't save anything. think about it.
him: (after serious mental deliberation on his part) uh, okay. thanks for talking to us.
me: (hangs up)

i've decided making people who don't understand computers write webpages using a third-party generator is analgous to having your friend remove your appendix using a cd-rom about the human anatomy. it probably can be done. but much more knowledge is necessary in order to do it painlessly. would you really have an employee write up expense reports if they didn't understand how to do spreadsheets?

Wow — you're quite the Casanova! We can tell you're a real woman-magnet and are never without an admirer or three. When combined with your significant charm, your attentive, sensitive demeanor makes you irresistible. Someone definitely made sure that you know how to treat a woman — ladies always feel special and appreciated when you're with them. You've got a knack for expressing yourself and showing your interest without looking too eager, too. That's a difficult balancing act, and you deserve a pat on the back for perfecting it.
how true. <yawn>

woke up this morning at seven and worked until breakfast at nine. then i went to the library to work more. as my computer was starting up, i decided that i'd be all corporate and check my schedule whilst i waited. i realized that i had wind ensemble across the city in forty-five minutes. i called up Brian, my fellow Tufts/NEC saxophonist to see if he was driving. during the twenty minutes before we left, I worked more. when we got to NEC, i managed e-mail for work until rehearsal started. so i asked myself, "am i a work-a-holic?" and i got this answer:
maybe i should get a fourth job.Slow down, take a deep breath, and RELAX! Has eating become a burden? Do you feel guilty when you have to take a bathroom break? Has it been so long since you've had a night off that you've forgotten what your friends look like? You need to shift out of high gear long enough to realize that you're running on empty! It's commendable that your job is so important to you. And your endurance and ambition are certainly admirable. But, where's the balance? Have you lost sight of your own needs because you're so focused on those of your company? In order to maximize productivity, you must have some balance in your life. Take some time out each day for YOU. It's healthy and necessary. If you are overworked, not only will your social and personal life suffer, but the quality of your work will suffer too. So, before you lose sight of what's important, take a step back and reassess your priorities. A successful career alone does not amount to a fulfilling life.
Learn more about workaholism.

sadly, the intellectual inside me knows that i live my musical life aspiring to be that which does not exist - classical saxophone. you examine the irony. the boot of the underlying issue is this: if it wasn't for saxophones and that "jazz" thing, you wouldn't have Stravinsky's Rite of Spring or Schoënberg's Chamber Symphony # 2. ponder that.louis, 23:02: #

the canon powershot s100 or the nikon coolpix 990... which should i get?Cindy, 19:08: #
So a few days ago one of my good friends, Jeff Wu, sent me an email with a friendly-looking attachment on it. So I'm like, oh my good friend Jeff Wu sent me an attachment. I'll open it up. Well, of course it turns out to be a virus, and now everytime I send an email I inadvertantly send porn along with it (if you want to see for yourself, email me). Hopefully I'll have this fixed before my dad asks me to send him a picture of my grandma and I send him, well, you can imagine what might happen here.ken, 18:05: #
hi, i'm ken. you may remember me from such websites as "%20" and "melei.com" (neither of which work right now). okay! here's news from ken: there is like at least 125 snow outside (that's in snow units). school got cancelled at 2:30, which was not so great because it did not occur until after the most boring lecture in the world (i could link to the lecture notes but i don't think you will want to read them unless you want to do what i did which is sleep). also: louis, you should get this camera.
hmmm... i don't think i'm going to school tomorrow.
louis, 13:38: #
i think i'll make quietcity.org a bit more graphics-intensive than this. however, i want to get a digital camera before i do, so i can use my own photos, etc. i'm shopping around, so any suggestions on what kind of camera to get are welcome.louis, 09:23: #
yesterday, my dad called me at 09:00:dad: hey lou. the internet is broken. [ describes what is happening.... ]
louis: how long has your computer been doing this?
dad: since friday.
louis: ok. i'll look into it. i'll call you back when i find something out.
so i go to idt's website, and notice this: "*IMPORTANT INTERNET DIAL-UP BULLETIN*" idt cancelled the accounts of all of their dial-up users [ seemingly ] without telling them. i was a bit displeased to read this, so i called my dad again:
louis: it seems idt cancelled all dial-up service. did you get a letter from them telling you this?
dad: not that i know of. i would have called you if i did.
louis: wow... i'm amazed at how much idt sucks. i'm going to go write a "fcuk you, strong letter to follow" note to the folks at idt and get you a new isp. ok?
dad: that'd be great. thanks lou.
so, without even blinking i go to earthlink's site and sign my dad up for an account. it takes about ten minutes. then i send my little note to idt. [ i haven't heard back from them yet. ] then i call up my dad again and guide him through the hoops of setting up his computer with the new settings. as it turns out, although earthlink was more than happy to take his credit card information earlier, they have yet to activate his account. [ i'm troubleshooting that right now, by email with the kind folks at earthlink's support center, who actually respond to e-mail. ]
this all, of course, happened after i spent more than eight hours this weekend crushing a bug in netscape that occurred on the tufts nutrition and center on hunger, poverty and nutrition policy sites, wherein the entire left menu would be over-written by the background. the code was and is html 4.01 compliant, and used no stylesheets. thus, it took us about eight months to crush the bug. eight months.

Hi! Just wanted to say that I got in, and everything works fine (except for my computer... virus go away!). Does this make me an official geek now?2001-02-04

after about six months' confusion and energy trying to debug a problem on nutrition.tufts.edu that occurs in Netscape 4.x PC, I've finally pinpointed the problem and can undertake a remedy to fix it. i just don't know how, exactly, i'm going to do so. nonetheless, i am happy to not spend any more hours troubleshooting the fcuking bug.in other work news, i met with my boss today to discuss my role at Tufts Nutrition, and what responsibilites my job entails. although we didn't completely cover all of the items that we wanted to for this meeting, i did convince my boss to buy me a Powebook G4 and to purchase a new computer for Kenji, as well. i'm beginning to think that i work too much. someone please smack some sense into me.

iron chef, the movie, is coming!louis, 12:57: #
the debacle that unfolded about me failing solfege last semester is finally coming to a close. after a brief meeting with the chair of the undergraduate theory department at nec, i discovered, contrary to what everyone else here has told me, that i can in fact employ a tutor to guide me through the solfege curriculum again, and then take the placement test next semester in place of my final. i might even be able to take solfege iii next year [ if i can place into it ]. all this is very interesting to you, i imagine.in other news, emily [ from princeton ] came up to tufts for an evening of spirit[s] and amusement last night. she came equipped with vegan rum balls. these, of course, are alcoholic - sapidly so. perhaps i shouldn't have eaten about two dozen of them, washing them down with beer and rum. at least, this is what i determined this morning.

chris, head cheese for graphics at Tufts Nutrition, never ceases to impress and astonish me with his creative brilliance. Check out his new site, magnetictape.org; try to restrain your drool.louis, 19:58: #
i have the impression that i'm ridiculously busy being incredibly unproductive. for example, i am a classical saxophone performace major at nec. hence, i should practice well and often. recently, when i've gone to nec to practice, either i've avoided practicing or been so incredibly inefficient that i stop. perhaps i should start forcing myself to get up at 6:45 like last semester, going each morning to the conservatory. why do i have to sleep, anyway?louis, 09:58: #
my new shirts [ hither, thither and yon ] came in this morning. so did a w4 from tufts for acadweb - it's scary to think that i made so much money this year. scary.did i mention that i'm going to new york with cindy in two weeks? word.
