t-minus twelve hours until my jury at eastman. it's a continuing part of The Great Trombone Farce 2000-2001. starring me. but don't worry, i've already done all my cramming for it, so i'll should have no problem, right? i thought so. oh, and today i was at the most posh place on earth, oak hill country club. yeah, i think the ryder cup was held there a few years ago. and that pga championship tournament thingie. a couple u.s. opens too. suffice me to say that the lawn of the club house (which resembles a castle) is manicured like a green. they also make the best scrambled eggs i've ever had. ever.

Today was a pretty fun day: The University and the Town of Princeton sponsered a big Communiversity celebration which was super fun; the student government hosted our Spring Concert featuring G Love and Special Sauce and Willie Nelson; and we had our last orchestra concert of the year--If you've never checked out Neptune from Holst's Planets...do it! 'Cause it's wicked cool :)

Have you ever noticed that spring sometimes brings out the nastiness in people?? End of the school year and all I guess...I am going to spend the weekend chillin....and listening to Green band audition tapes....Holt 1st march mvmt. Can you think of anything else you would rather do? Yeah, I didn't think so.

Hello All! I am new, This is Bill McBain. Speaking of incredible music experiences I have a great site for you guys. It is Etree. It is a mailing list for ftp sites that distribute SHN fromatted live recordings from concerts. They distribute digital audio only of bands that allow taping. This is good for me because I am into JamBands like Guster, Phish, String Cheese Incident, Moe, DMB, etc. etc. The files are large, but if you have the bandwidth for them they are high quality. check it out. Also you might want to check out sugarmegs if you want to listen to those bands, but dont have the bandwidth/time/energy for FTP sites, it is streaming music for jambands.

there's quite a discussion going on over at derek's site about the stasis of weblogs and the product based image that the web brings everything.
"All I know is that if we could somehow reengineer our culture to be people-based instead of product-based, we'd all be better off."
-dmp
believe me, it's worth the read. go. now.

Jon, 01:27: #

i just had arguably the most incredible music experience of my life at the guster concert in rochester tonight. they played "mona lisa" off their first album, for their final song, the second encore. except they did it completely acoustically, as in no amps. they asked everyone to quiet down, and they moved to the very front of the stage, even closer to where i was in the seventh row. and then they played. two thousand people were absolutely silent while ryan and adam sang and played guitar, and brian played percussion behind them. the sound was so pure, it went straight to my soul. i cannot even describe what it's like for an entire hall of people to be screaming wildly one minute, and be so absolutely focused on something so beautiful the next. when they finished, they just said goodnight and walked off the stage. the lights immediately came on. i got shivers for twenty seconds in three different waves. i just stood there in disbelief, wondering if what i saw really happened or not. what i wouldn't give to be back in the middle of that again...

Hey, if anyone can find a poem with the phrase "the cobwebs hang like curtains" or "spider webs hang like curtains on the path we used to walk," please let me know. A lot of colleges give students access to poetry databases run by the school, and any help at all would be much appreciated. Thanks!

so i did find my tax return. i had brought it to the office. so now i can file my taxes on time. that will make the government pleased.

in related office events, last night was "louis redesigns the layout of the office" night. i now have asembled a corner of the office for my consumption throughout the summer. sadly, aryn will be taking home on of my babies with him to san jose. oh well, i suppose three computers is enough for one person. at least, for a little while.

The recording on the Stingers website is actually pretty old. It outdates my time in the group. Probably from 1997. But yes, we still do have some tanks :) We have 2 concerts coming up. For the Jazz concert, we're playing No More Blues by Jobim, and Lament by J.J. Johnson. For our classical concert, we're playing some Bach Contrapuncti (is that a word?), Wagner's Tannhauser, Holst's first suite, Pavane by Ravel, and my favorite, Mahler Sym. No. 2, 4th movement, arranged for 8 part trombone choir by me, among other pieces. Hopefully we're going to do some recording too...

Jilly, 12:47: #

Can't help you on the tongue ring issue Jon, but I know other musicians who have them and sometimes struggle with articulation....like it is hard enough already. So March is over thank god and now it is time for Myrtle Beach!! I will do nothing but read and relax on the beach. The orlando trip with 300 people was fun....actually it was smooth. Everyone had lost of free time, more than any other trip, and pool at the hotel was popular, the weather was great. I ate at the California Grille on top of the Contemporary Hotel.....it was incredible...our bill was $500 for four of us....but it was well worth it! Disney World is crazy....not my idea of an incredible time but there are a lot of wacky things to see there...good places to eat and drink and that is cool. Jon I liked listening to your Trombone Choir.....sounds like you have some tanks in that group!!

2001-04-07

Jon, 23:58: #

Does anyone know the deal with playing a brass instrument, specifically trombone, and having a tongue ring? I can't find any info on the internet. A trombone player here at UR who plays in the symphony orchestra with me and the Stingers trombone choir told me that a trombonist who took lessons with his teacher down in Atlanta got a tongue ring. So people have done it. But the teacher refused to teach the kid again. Hmmmm...... In other news, it's almost warm here in Rochester. Almost. The room lottery for next year is in, and I got a pretty kickass 6 person suite. Every person's room (all singles) has two floors. I've already started buying massive amounts of stuff to fill it up, including an entire entertainment center. I love compulsive purchases. Registering for classes is next week. I'm taking conducting and counterpoint, both at Eastman. My first music courses in a year. I can't wait...only one more chem class to take. I can't think of anything else cool in my life. That's probably it...if something comes up, I'll let you know. Over and out.
